A patient guide for every student. Time back for every teacher.

Schanion is built for Victorian secondary schools, VCE Years 11 and 12. This page says what we are trying to do, the rules we hold ourselves to, and what exists today.

Mission and vision

Our mission

To give every VCE student the guidance of a patient tutor and every teacher their time back, without taking a decision away from a teacher or a family.

That means joining the separate jobs around a school day, from the roll to catch-up to the weekly note home, so that fewer of them fall to a teacher at the end of the day, and a student who is stuck or away has somewhere clear to start.

Our vision

A school where help reaches each student when they need it, staff spend their hours teaching, and everyone can see the rules the software follows.

Trust is the point. A parent, a student and a principal should each be able to ask what the software can see and do, and get a plain answer that the system itself enforces.

Rules we hold ourselves to.

A teacher decides.
Anything that becomes a record is confirmed by a person: the roll, a mark, a message to a family. The software suggests and drafts. It never decides.
Clues before answers.
The companion helps a student get to the answer alone, and a topic counts as mastered only from a check the student passes without help.
Private means private.
A student's conversations with the companion are not read by teachers, parents or leaders. Safeguarding follows the school's own process and carries no conversation text.
Effort is not understanding.
XP rewards effort and mastery records understanding. They are kept apart, and there are no streaks, public rankings or loot boxes.
Say what is real.
What is built is listed. What is mocked or not built is listed too. Savings are planning assumptions until a school measures them.
No ads, no selling.
Student data is not sold or used for advertising, and no student data is used to train a language model, because no language model is used.

What exists today, and what does not.

Built and working in the demonstration

  • A connected roll with catch-up plans for confirmed absences
  • A scripted companion and study plans for Years 11 and 12, with the four commerce studies mapped across Units 1 to 4
  • Marking evidence against a teacher's rubric, with school-assessed coursework marks off by default
  • Weekly family updates that a teacher approves first
  • A staff-moderated school community with shared attendance goals, trophies and rewards
  • An audit log, a safeguarding queue and a live permission matrix

Not built, or not done

  • A language model. The companion is a scripted guide
  • Writing back to a school's student information system, and email or SMS delivery
  • Single sign-on and multi-factor sign-in
  • A trial in a real school, and any measured result
  • Full curriculum content. Business Management Unit 3 is the deepest, and teachers must review everything before students see it

Before any real student uses it, a school needs consent, a privacy impact assessment, a security review, curriculum review by subject teachers and a named person for the safeguarding queue. The deployment notes list each one.

Start with one class.
